A few years after, dice and card games were introduced which required less energy to play and even became more fun-filled. One of the games introduced was Yahtzee.

About the Game of Yahtzee

Yahtzee is a dice and card game created by "Milton Bradley" in the early 1940s. Back then in Ohio, the game was initially marketed to the general public by NAST. That is the "National Association Service of Toledo" located in Ohio.

What are Yahtzee Score Sheets?

A Yahtzee score sheet is an important scoring item used when playing the game of Yahtzee. During the thirteen rounds of a Yahtzee game session, Yahtzee score sheets are used to record every point(s) gained by each player involved in the group. There are two sections on the score sheet; the upper section and the lower section. Both sections have a different scoring system and here is a breakdown of what you need to know about them.

Section 1: Upper Section

This contains singled-numbered slots which range from "aces through sixes";

  • Aces - count and add only aces
  • Twos - count and add only twos
  • Threes - count and add only threes
  • Fours - count and add only fours
  • Fives - count and add only fives
  • Sixes - count and add only sixes

Section 2: Lower Section

This comprises of several categories that include;

  • Three of a kind - add a total of all dices
  • Four of a kind - add a total of all dices
  • Full House - Score 25 points with 3 of a kind
  • Small straight - sequence of 4 worth 30 points
  • Large straight - sequence of 5 worth 40 points
  • Yahtzee - 5 of a kind worth 50 points and 100 points subsequently
  • Chance - score a total of all 5 dice regardless of the combination

Points are recorded on the score sheets in each of these categories over "13-round" scoring boxes. When every score has been recorded, the points of each player are accumulated and the person with the highest total points wins.

Basic Rules that Guides the Game of Yahtzee

The ideal thing to do before playing any game is to get familiar with the features and also learn the rules to master how the game works. If you want to learn how to play Yahtzee, the first thing you need to learn is the basic rules that guide how the game should be played. Understanding how it works is very important.

If you're playing Yahtzee for the first time, it might look a little confusing at first. But once you understand the rules and the tricks, the game becomes easy to play.

Here are the basic rules you need to get familiar with;

Getting Yahtzee Score Sheets:

The first thing you need to do before playing Yahtzee is to provide score sheets for each player involved. Players will be required to enter their names on the score sheets as means of identification. The score sheets are used to record players' points in each round of the Yahtzee game.

Deciding Player's Turns:

Players have to roll dice to determine who will go first before the game starts. Whoever gets the highest total number will get the nod and start the game in the first round. The person with the next total number plays next, and this pattern continues until every player has made a move in the round. When the next round starts, player one goes first, and so on.

Rolling the Dice of Yahtzee:

The dice are one of the most important features of Yahtzee. Just like the score sheets, dice have an important role they play. Player's will take turns to roll the dice in each round in other to get their desired score. There are 5 dice that can be rolled 3 times to achieve the desired score. Once you have your desired dice combo, the score sheet has to be marked so the next player can take a turn to roll the dice. You can decide to set aside holders or keepers in the first and second roll but the target is to score the highest points.

Yahtzee Scoring Format:

There are two sections known as the upper section and the lower section. Each section comprises different categories that require a different scoring format. Every dice roll has an assigned points value, which means the points recorded in boxes depend on the value of the diced rolled per round.

Note that if at your third dice roll you don't have a dice value that matches an empty box, you will have to record ZERO in one of the categories. Once you do this, that particular category will be closed for you.

1. Upper Section Scoring Format: in this section, your target as a player is to score at least 63 points. If you achieve this, a 35-points bonus will be added to your score at the end of the game. Boxes are labeled aces to sixes and you'll need to roll 5 dice to achieve combinations. Scoring here involves taking a total of the specified die-face.

2. Lower Section Scoring Format: in this section, your target as a player is to score a Zero or an indicated amount of score defined by the category. Phrases are used in this section which indicates different combinations of dice and how the categories should be scored.

How to Score a Yahtzee Score Sheet

Here are rules that guide how a Yahtzee score sheet should be filled;

  • Count the number of players involved and give everyone a score sheet.
  • Write the names of all the players participating on the score sheets.
  • There are 13 rounds in the game of Yahtzee and 13 score categories. Every player is required to score once in each of these categories.
  • If a category has been scored with a dice value, you can't change it and you can't choose the category for scoring again throughout the entire game.
  • At the end of the game, count all the scores and record the total.

Whoever scores the highest total points wins the Yahtzee game.
